Jesús Huerta de Soto (born December 23, 1956, Madrid) is Professor of Political Economy at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid. He holds a PhD in Economic Sciences and a Doctorate in Law from Madrid’s Complutense University (graduating summa cum laude and with a special award for academic excellence). In 1983, he was presented with the international King Juan Carlos Prize in Economics by His Majesty the King. Huerta de Soto has also received the Adam Smith Award given by the CNE of Brussels (2005), the Franz Cuhel Memorial Prize for Excellence in Economic Education from the Prague University of Economics (2006), the Gary G. Schlarbaum Prize for Liberty (Salamanca, 2009), the Foment del Treball Nacional medal (Barcelona, 2009), an honorary doctorate in social sciences from Francisco Marroquín University (Guatemala, 2009), an honorary doctorate from Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iași (Romania, 2010), an honorary doctorate from Moscow’s Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation founded in 1919 (Russian Federation, 2011), and the Gold Hayek Medal from the Hayek Gesellschaft at the University of Göttingen (2013).
He is also a mathematical actuary (Complutense University) and earned an MBA from Stanford University in California, where he pursued graduate studies in economics on a scholarship from the Bank of Spain.
He has served as Vice President and is a member of the Mont Pelerin Society and also belongs to the Royal Economic Society of London and the American Economic Association.
He is the Founder and Director of the scientific journal Market Processes: European Journal of Political Economy (2004 – the present) and Editor of the Spanish Edition of the Collected Works of F.A. Hayek [Obras completas de F.A. Hayek] in twenty-two volumes, of which eleven have now appeared in Spanish. In addition, he is editor of the sixty-one volumes in the collection Nueva Biblioteca de la Libertad [New Library of Liberty], published by Unión Editorial.

Jesús Huerta de Soto is also, together with Alejandro Nieto García and others, a joint author of Libro blanco sobre el papel del estado en la economía española [White Book on the Role of the State in the Spanish Economy] (edition overseen by Rafael Termes Carreró and published in 1996 by the Instituto Superior de Estudios Empresariales).
He has published sixty-four articles in academic journals of economics and social sciences and thirty-nine chapters in other collective works. Moreover, he has, to date, directed thirty-eight doctoral dissertations. Finally, videos of the classes in his master’s and doctoral programs have been published in English and Spanish and are available on his YouTube channel.
